Glaucous Gull, Larus hyperboreus

2nd Calendar Year, March 2004

Prince William County Landfill, Virginia, USA

A very pale bird aged as first winter by bare parts colors.  The underside still retained some fairly clear barring e.g. on the undertail coverts, and the belly and lower breast.  One of two first winter birds present at the landfill that month.

The bill of this bird appeared slender compared to many of the American Herring Gulls present at the site.  This with the small dark eye gave it a distinctive look.
